Zapas are artisan jute espadrilles made in Spain, designed in Melbourne and rocked all over Australia.
A must-have timeless accessory, espadrilles are a closet staple for any age, gender, occasion and lifestyle.
Launched in early 2016, Zapas combines outstanding quality, eco-friendly materials and comfort with 100% original prints designed to explore Spain and it’s culture.
What is known about Spain worldwide? Paella, cerveza, siesta, bulls… the distance and stereotypes often dampen the rich Spanish culture and its mesmerising folklore. Two Melbourne-living Spaniards, Lola Suarez and Maria Yebra are set to change that one espadrille at a time.
Each carefully designed Zapas print is not only a limited edition but also inspired by the myriad of details, colour palette and essence that compose Spain. From the vast olive tree fields to the traditional Moorish ceramic tiles, Valencia oranges, Flamenco or Iberian donkeys, each Zapas Espadrilles tells you a story filled with Spanish charm and allure.
“We chose espadrilles because we have grown with them, from our first toddler lace ups to the vertigo-inducing wedges of our youth to comfortable platforms and sandals.” Lola, founder, says “Updating this cherished Spanish handcraft with modern, original prints inspired by our homeland stories was ideal.”
Having a fair supply chain was an important value for the Zapas team as well, choosing to work with artisans and small workshops in rural Mediterranean communities. The Espadrille trade in this area has been passed on in between families for centuries and the experienced hands, meticulous attention to detail and dedication of Spanish artisans has no comparison.
“Being aware of the economic situation in our home country, there was also a desire to contribute somehow to the Spanish economy.” says Maria, founder “We carefully considered every single element of the chain including the soles, fabric and laces prioritising quality while being environmentally conscious.”
Zapas espadrilles come wrapped in recycled butcher paper and twine, instead of the typical shoebox as these tend to end up in the bin. Zapas team believes in making little actions for a more sustainable living.
Zapas Espadrilles come in several models for women and men and can be purchased online as well as selected retailers with an affordable RRP of $60 to $95.
