More than 6,000 dangerous toys, sleepwear items, and luggage straps have been seized over concerns they could end up in Christmas stockings this holiday season.
Victorian Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz was joined by General Manager of Kidsafe, Jason Chambers to crush the products, which were taken off the market by Consumer Affairs Victoria.
While some of these items clearly have sharp edges or small parts, others look harmless but can be a fire or health risk.
Consumer Affairs Victoria inspectors have removed more than 69,000 unsafe items from sale including more than 11,000 children’s products during 2016.
Products seized included squeeze toys, projectiles, cots, portable swimming pools, sunglasses and miniature motor bikes.
A supplier who fails to comply with a mandatory safety standard can face fines of up to $220,000 for an individual and $1.1 million for a body corporate.
